NAMI of Darke, Miami and Shelby Counties Video Series Shares Personal Stories

3/1/2016

PictureA frame from "Calming the Storm," part of the "In Their Own Words" video series by NAMI of DMS.
A new video series, "In Their Own Words," presents the compelling stories of individuals and families who have been affected by mental illness, and who want to share what they've learned from their experiences. The videos can be viewed on NAMI of DMS's website, www.NAMIofDMS.org/watch.

NAMI of DMS presents three short stories, approximately 3 to 4 minutes each, from individuals with varying, personal experiences with mental illness in their families. The people are real, local, and present examples of the kinds of insight and affirmation that comes from joining NAMI or attending NAMI programs.

In "Calming the Storm," a working mom turns to art to express feelings and work through co-dependency and her own mental illness.

In "Families Helping Families," when a family experiences a suicide and finds themselves not knowing where to turn, they are energized to help other families find their way.

The third video, "To See A Person...," is told by an adolescent of her experiences with mental illness, stigma, and her vision of how she wants others to see her.

NAMI of Darke, Miami and Shelby Counties is dedicated to connecting individuals and families dealing with mental illness to others with lived experience. Individuals and families provide support and encouragement, and help link those struggling to services and resources.
