Protect the Protectors $500 Scholarships Available


The scholarships are available to law enforcement officers in Miami, Darke, and Shelby Counties in Ohio.

As part of a Crisis Intervention Team Expansion Grant, the Tri-County Board is making scholarships available for the wellness program “Protecting the Protectors Using Brain Chemistry Optimization,” which is specifically designed for helping law enforcement and first responders optimize personal and professional performance and wellness. The scholarships are available to law enforcement officers in Miami, Darke, and Shelby Counties in Ohio.

Since early 2017, Robertson Research Institute’s Protect the Protectors™, has studied more than 1000 law enforcement individuals, leaning on its rich history of studying over 16,000 total individuals in evaluating what it takes to prevent unwanted diseases, moods and behaviors. 

The organization was nominated by Microsoft as the best medical technology for visionary and innovative solutions and the winner of the Arab Innovation’s best predictive analytics and artificial intelligence company in 34 countries. Marc Decker, President, and Dr. Joel Robertson, Founder, of Robertson Brain Health in Grand Rapids, MI, describe the program:

"Our studies in the law enforcement communities have shown:
  • 2X more likely to have depression
  • 2X higher use of alcohol for self-medication
  • High suicide rate (likely to reach the #1 this year, but overall have been 3rd in past years)
  • Average of 15 years shorter lifespan than the average American
  • Officer health and safety, especially as of late, has risen to the forefront of most agencies’ priorities.  It is obvious that depression and suicide, relationship failures and the development of diseases are more prominent within the law enforcement community.  Robertson Research Institute’s Protect the Protectors™ goal is to prevent and improve these statistics.  To accomplish these goals, one must understand the brain, create tailor programs for agencies and individuals.
"Although the identification of these diseases is relatively easy and the causes behind them are general in nature, the ability to bring about change has been a difficult task as it requires factors specific to an individual.  Our studies have found unique factors of how different positions, size of agency and geographic location to metropolitan areas that create officer’s disease, moods and behaviors.  For example, as stress increases and brain chemistry changes, an officer has 3.1 times more difficulty getting to sleep.  This increases depression, changes brain chemistry and “shortens the fuse”.

"As we continue to work with more agencies and officers Robertson Research Institute’s Protect the Protectors™ continues to study the factors that contribute to resiliency, the impact of certain environments and events on the individual brain along with methods to enhance healthy brains in an unhealthy environment.  Our studies since the onset of COVID-19 and recent lack of support of policing we have found:
  • Long term stress has created a brain chemistry profile that is 3.36 times more frustrated than one that is in balance
  • Forgetfulness increased from 22% in recruits to 40% in officers with more than 20 years of experience
