The Tri-County Board of Recovery and Mental Health Services is committed to establishing itself and its contract agencies as culturally competent entities. This policy emphasizes our engagement in continuous self-assessment regarding cultural knowledge and resources and our ability to adapt service models that best accommodate minority clients seeking services from our system.
The Tri-County Board of Recovery and Mental Health Services shall require its contract agencies to adopt similar policies.
Cultural Competence is the incorporation of awareness, understanding, and responsiveness to the beliefs, values, customs, institutions and ethnic heritage of individuals into training, treatment, and service designed to impact upon, or meet the needs of, individuals or groups.
In order to foster cultural competence to the Tri-County system, the Board will, whenever possible:
1. Make a concerted effort to hire unbiased employees. When applicable, principles of cultural competence will be added to job descriptions, and questions on cultural competence will be included in job interviews.
2. Seek advice and consultation from the minority community. The Board will periodically consult with entities representing the minority community regarding the ability of the Tri-County Board to serve a diverse clientele.
3. Include cultural competence in its service planning. The Board will look at the services it funds in light of their access to minority populations.
4. Provide ongoing training opportunities regarding cultural competence for service providers in the Tri-County system.
