Coping During Challenging Times

This training starts out with an in-depth discussion about the effects of recent events on the stress level of the participants in their professional role with their clients. 

This training focuses on developing a greater understanding of the effects of fear and stress on the human condition both physically and emotionally.  Participants are provided with a Life Change Index Scale which they can use with clients to assess the level of stress the client has experienced.   The concept of fight, flight or freeze is discussed from a biochemical response and an emotional response.  The impact of Traumatic Stress is reviewed.  Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is reviewed as it relates to the circumstances of current events.     

The participants are provided with a Stress Assessment Packet which contains four assessment that can be used with clients.  The Symptoms of Stress Assessment allows the individual to indicate which symptoms of stress they have experienced and at what frequency in order to gain insight into the level stress is impacting their health.  The Perceived Stress Scale helps a person understand how different situations effect their feelings and their perceived stress.  The Ardell Wellness Stress Test uses a holistic approach to stress.  It examines the aspects of physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social health for a balanced assessment.  The Stress Coping Resources Inventory examines a person’s capacity to cope with stress based on the activities they already have in place.

The training examines the ways a person can decrease their exposure to stress and increase their capacity to cope by implementing coping strategies.  These strategies will be built into to a care plan for the clients.  The concept of resiliency is examined.  The participants are given a Core Personal Values assessment to use with clients.  This allows for personal identification of values which supports a person in prioritizing goals and understanding what motivates them.

Participants will learn ways to assist client to minimize their exposure to events that cause stress.  They will be given tools to assist with identifying feelings and discuss ways to process feelings in order to heal.  They will learn approaches to assist clients in challenging their sense of helplessness.  They will be provided with information about healthy habits related to exercise, diet, connection to nature, sleep, and connection to spirituality.  Indicators of when medical care or additional mental health care may be needed will be reviewed.  Resources and how to get started will be discussed.  Warning signs and risk factors for suicide will be reviewed. 

Participants will be given a Self-Care Wheel that can be used with clients to assist with developing a plan to implement healthy habits to improve the ability cope and increase a person’s resiliency.  
 
Objectives:
  1.  Participants will learn about the effects of fear and traumatic stress on the human condition.
  2. Participants will learn about the fight, flight and freeze response.
  3. Participants will learn how to use self-assessment tools to assist clients with determining impact stress has on them.
  4. Participants will learn how to use self-assessment tools to assist clients with identifying their coping skills and values.
  5. Participants will gain knowledge on the wide range of habits and techniques one can use to improve coping skills and build resiliency.
  6. Participants will improve their knowledge of resources.

  • 8:30 to 9:00   Sign-in
  • 9:00 to 9:30   Welcome, Develop Group Ground Rules, Review Agenda.  Group discussion on what is happening in the world that is impacting the mental health profession.
  • 9:30 to 10:30  Discussion about Fear and Fight, Flight of Freeze in response to fear.  Discuss Traumatic Stress from a physical and emotional side.  Review Life Change Index Scale which examines the total amount of stressful events occurring in a person’s life.  Review Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and how the mental health profession assists at the different levels. 
  • 10:30 to 10:45 Break
  • 10:45 to 12:15   Review the Stress Assessments Packet which contains four different self-assessments which can provide insight into a person’s ability to identify and handle stress.  Review and discuss how to teach self-care, build resiliency and healthy life habits to reduce the impact of stress and increase the ability to cope.  Review the Core Personal Values assessment.  How to identify and accept feelings.  How to challenge the sense of helplessness.  Review the Self-Care Wheel.  Review Resources.  Answer any questions.  Complete evaluation.
